Green Tech Benefits
There are some obvious, and not so obvious reasons why to start switching to Greener Technologies within your organisation.
- Save Money
- This can be achieved by reducing your power consumption and ultimately your electrical utility bills
- Instead of simply replacing damaged/broken devices, ensure the cost of replacing the device ic cheaper than it would be to replace a component such as batteries, rollers, keyboards etc
- Re-use/recycling of your own products and waste means less cost involved obtaining and using raw materials
- Innovation
- A Bureau of Economic Analysis study showed that industry spent in the region of $102 billion in 1992 on
pollution control, of which $17 billion (less than 2 percent) was offset by innovation - Smart Buildings - by using smart green technology throughout your building you could have smart electrical monitoring; security systems which can detect unnecessary windows and doors being open
- Virtual Collaboration - web and audio conferencing which also reduces travelling costs. A Deutsche Telekom study showed that a video conference over a distance of 100 km uses less than 5% of the primary energy that would be consumed if the participants were to travel by car – much more with increasing distances and the use of air travel. A 2006 study by the European Telecommunications Network Operators Association and the World Wildlife Fund concluded that if 20 percent of business travel in the European Union (EU) were replaced by non-travel means, such as audio or video conferencing, they might save about 25 million tons of carbon dioxide by 2010; 22 million more tons could be saved if just 10 percent of EU employees became telecommuters
- Dematerilsation - reduction in use of paper products and postage such as e-billing and e-procurement. Use of Radio Frequency ID tags (RFID) to track stock reduces resources required to manually track these items
- Business Processes - the early adoption of company wide green processes, products and services
- 16% of the companies used the internet for product design, while only 5% used internet-based solutions
to their support human resource management. If companies moved their traditional paper-based Product Design and HR functions to tecnology based solutions this would also reduce administration and costs
- A Bureau of Economic Analysis study showed that industry spent in the region of $102 billion in 1992 on
